69. Star and Moon Cake Step by Step

Before you begin:

Kitchens can be dangerous so make sure you have just read the Kitchen Safety Checklist.
Check with Mum or Dad that you are allowed to cook.
So the food doesn’t get any germs wash your hands with warm soapy water and dry them well.
Read the recipe through before you begin and get out all the equipment and ingredients you will need.
Don’t forget to have fun, and the best cooks ALWAYS clean up their mess.

Here’s what you need:
• 2 x 470g packet butter cake mixes
• 50g melted butter
• 1quantity butter icing- see recipe in
  Fairy Castle Cake
• Liquorice straps cut into strips
• Red piping jell
• 2 marshmallows, 4 chocolate coated
  liquorice bullets, 2 chocolate freckles
• Lolly snakes and spiders
• Red piping gel
• Amount of sparklers relevant to child’s age

Here’s how to do it:

  Step 1   Step 2   Step 3

Step 1
Make a moon template out of baking paper and lay onto oblong cake.

Step 2
Cut out moon shape.

Step 3
Brush moon and star shapes with melted butter and allow to set for 10 minutes in a cool place. (The melted butter coating prevents the crumbs from the cake “catching” on the icing and makes it easier to spread.)

  Step 4   Step 5

Step 4
Spread 1/4 of the icing onto a large board. Divide remaining icing in half and colour one half bright blue and the other bright yellow. Spread blue icing onto moon and yellow icing onto stars. Place moon and stars onto board as shown in photograph.

Step 5
Place liquorice strips around the outside of the moon cake. Using template cut outs, position them on moon cake and lightly mark around to form angry eyes and mouth. Outline mouth and eyes with liquorice strips, add teeth with piping jell.
Make spiders on two of the star cakes using 1 marshmallow, 1 chocolate freckle and 2 chocolate coated liquorice bullets for the body for each spider, liquorice strips for legs and red piping jell for body markings. Finish cakes with lolly snakes, insects and sparklers.

Makes: 1 large cake and 3 small stars. Serves approximately 20.

Setting Up Time: 1 hour

Cooking Time: 45 minutes for large cake and 30 minutes each for the stars.
